Good overview of 2025. And the chaos is just getting started.

Chaos 2- the Sequel

What a tiresome year. I know you are as much of a supporter of Ukraine as I am, and as a Ukrainian Canadian it sickens me that I'm in my comfy chair while my countrymen suffer under putin's hammer. I long for Moscow to be bombed and for his invasion to be ended, and remain frustrated at the apparent inertia from the EU. Do better! Having said that, people who study Russia are predicting their economy is on the verge of collapse, and I'm not sure China is willing to shore them up. We shall see.

Regarding Carney, I see his rise a little differently, but I'm open to disagreement. He never struck me as power-hungry in the way PP is. In fact I reckon Carney was motivated by the election of trump, and the consequent threat to Canada. I voted for him to get us out of our dependence on the US, and I think he has put his whole heart into exactly that. I'm more afraid of Canada itself being his biggest challenge, as provinces bicker over details and forget our national project. I have nothing but contempt for Alberta's Daniel Smith and maple-maga.

You mention how isolationism and tariffs stifle innovation. Agree 100%. Seems to me America is heading for serious stagnation not only economically, but in science and research as well.

I hope you are correct in your optimism. I'm afraid things will get worse before they get better, IF they get better. I live with anger every day. Appreciate your writing as always.

It does not bode well for 2026 but like you said, there has to be a breakup of this chaos sometime. It can’t go on indefinitely. I hope 2026 will be the last of those « interesting times » year…. Thank you for your overview with a historical perspective….humanity has gone through much more chaos and we’re still on the planet. The screw-ups are only passing moments in the big picture….

Justin, thank you for another year of great reading. Happy New Year!

Both domestic & foreign affairs are big concerns. Anxious doesn't quite describe it.
